How to Connect to the Scene on Social Media
While the purpose of this blog is to present a gay subculture in Mexico City to a foreign audience, I really recommend you to follow the scene yourselves on social media. It’ll all be in Spanish so it’ll be a challenge. I hope I can help bridge the gap.
Many gay men in Mexico City have a separate Twitter account they use to follow the underground establishments as well as their favorite sex twitteros. This is a good idea if you’re shy and you value your anonymity. In twitter, all of your followers are given notification when you like or comment on any pictures or posts. You also want to make sure that you disable any permissions that allow twitter to notify any of your contacts of your twitter account. After you create your separate account, twitter is easy. Just follow all the places I mention on my list. If you find any that I have not found yet let me know and I’ll make it worth your while $$.
WhatsApp is big time in Mexico. The interface is awkward at first and it seems very old school if you’re used to Facebook, but mastering it is easy after awhile. It will help to be savy with whats app before you arrive in Mexico. Everybody uses it.
Some places will have their followers join a group and others will require you to send them a message first and then proceed to send you all their publicity.
- Install WhatsApp on your phone
- Touch the WhatsApp Icon of the establishment that you want to connect with.
- If it is a group you will simply touch ‘join’ and you’ll be part of the group.
- If it is a phone number, What’s App will open automatically to a window where you can begin writing a message to that number. Write the following. ‘Hola. Que Tal? Me puede pasar la dirección y los horarios por favor?’
- You will receive an initial response, usually in the form of a photo of a flyer, and you will probably continue to receive promotions daily or weekly from this establishment.
- Status: The WhatsApp application has 3 interfaces. Chats, Status, and Calls. Many people upload pictures and videos under the status section. It is very similar to Facebook Reels, and Instagram Stories. Be sure to check these to find out what is going on with all the places and people you follow. Many of the guys you connect with in Mexico City will upload interesting things to these status too.
