I do my best to translate the culture that I have discovered in Mexico into English, for my readers. But there are a few words that are so unique to Mexico that they do not have an English counterpart. This is a short post explaining the definitions and concepts of this foreign culture.
Ambiente – Ambiente is the act of gay men looking for sex. It is a synonym of ‘cruising.’ I write about steam rooms with Ambiente. There are other steam rooms in Mexico City without Ambiente, and it would be pointless, and disappointing to cruise for sex there.
Las Cabinas – Noun. Las Cabinas translate to ‘The Cabins.’ In the gay world they specifically refer to booths in dirty bookstores where gay sex can happen. Synonyms: Glory Hole, Gay Porn Store, Video Booth
Lugar del Encuentro – A physical space designed to accommodate gay male sexual encounters and nothing else. A gay bar is not a Lugar del encuentro because it has other uses and many people do not go to there specifically to have sex.
Gay Twitter – the collective voice of twitter accounts that talk about gay issues. This can include underground gay lugares del encuentro, local amateur gay porn, gay activists, accounts and influencers promoting gay mens health
La Puteria – Noun. This is the noun form of the verb Putear. Putear means to go around searching for sex. Puteria can happen online, or in real life. Sometimes it is done is places specifically designed for puteria, such as sex clubs, cabinas, or Gay Bars, but it can also be done in creative places. example: for this the gym is nothing more than his puteria.
